The History of Manassas
The original settlement of Manassas grew up at the junction of two railroads in 1852, linking Northern Virginia with Washington, D.C., and the Shenandoah Valley with Richmond. The community also played a pivotal role in two major Civil War conflicts that bear its name: the First Battle of Bull Run and the Second Battle of Manassas.
It was also the home of two railroad companies: the O&A and the Manassas Gap. The railroads connected the farms of Fauquier County with the merchants of Alexandria. The single track O&A drew business not only from Fauquier County but from the Shenandoah Valley as well.
In the 1930s, commuter trains began running through Manassas on routes to Washington, D.C. The train station still stands and is served by Norfolk Southern, Amtrak, and the Virginia Railway Express.
Local businesses, restaurants, and attractions make the city a vibrant place to live or visit. The Old Town District has family-owned shops and restaurants as well as a farmers' market that sells local fruits, vegetables, breads, and more.
